The Olympics
Many years ago, the Olympic Games were banned by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. On April 6, 1896 however, the games were reborn in Athens, Greece about 1500 years later. From that time on, the games would be called the Modern Olympics. The Modern Olympics allowed all nations to participate in these sporting events. One of these sporting events was ice hockey which came to the Modern Olympics in 1920. Since that time, ice hockey has become a national sport in the winter Olympics. The world of sports has become more exciting because the Modern Olympics were brought back to the world, and because ice hockey has become a very popular national sport.
To start, the sports world has become more exciting because the Modern Olympics were brought back to the world. The first Modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in the year of 1896. It was held in Greece to act as a reminder that the Ancient Olympics began there (Singh). There were nine major events in the first Modern Olympics which were athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, tennis, and shooting. Today, there are 41 total events from the summer and winter Olympics (Fischer). In the first Modern Olympics, only men could participate in sports. However, women were allowed to play sports four years later, but could only compete in tennis and golf (Fischer). The progression of sports in the Modern Olympics has given a greater variety of events.
Finally, ice hockey has developed as a very popular national sport. Ice hockey is a very quick and physical game. Due to the intense physical contact in the game, many injuries occur including concussions (Cahow). The United States hockey team currently trains at a facility called Lake Placid, which is located in New York. In fact, the United States Olympic hockey team has trained at Lake Placid ever since the year of 1980 (Fischer). In the upcoming winter Olympics, Canada is predicted to win the gold medal. Oddly enough, Canada defeated the United States in the 2010 winter Olympics to take home the gold medal (Fischer). Ice hockey has brought a new kind of excitement to the winter Olympics.
In conclusion, the competition of sports has thrived in popularity because the Modern Olympics were improved over the years, and because ice hockey has grown as a famous national sport. The Olympics are the greatest sporting event in the world. Since it is such a big event, it takes four years to prepare for the Modern Olympics. Overall, the Olympic Games have brought more competition, tradition and culture to each country that participates in the events.
